MOUNTAIN DULCIMER CLASSES - Taught by Wanda Degen or Gloria Hays
9:30 AM - Introduction to the Mountain Dulcimer - Gloria
For anyone, any age, little or no music experience necessary.
Learn the basics, including how to play simple tunes in the Ionian mode.
Skill level: Beginners
10:55 AM - Mountain Dulcimer Sampler - Wanda
Explore different tunings and techniques... fingerpicking, flatpicking,
chording and harmony lines. Through a variety of songs and tunes in
mostly Ionian and Aeolian modes you'll learn how to play in different
keys and different time signatures. Wanda considers herself a
"handout-heavy" instructor and the repertoire includes Celtic and Folk.
Skill level: Players should be familiar with the basics of playing their
instrument.
2:20 PM - Playing By Ear - Linda
Learn to play a song without reading music.
Skill level: Players should be familiar with their instruments.
3:45 PM - Glad for DAD- Exploring the Mixolydian Tuning (intermediate) -
Wanda
A demonstration of why Mixolydian is considered the most versatile of
tunings for the mountain dulcimer. Tuned DAD you will play tunes and
songs in the keys of D and G major as well as E minor. The repertoire
will include traditional and contemporary Folk and Celtic music and a
variety of right hand and left hand techniques will be covered.
Skill level: This class is for players who are familiar with the basics of
the mountain dulcimer.
HAMMERED DULCIMER- Taught by Linda Thomas or Gloria Hays
10:55 AM - Introduction to the Hammered Dulcimer
CLASS FULL
Learn how the notes are laid out and how to see patterns while
playing this fascinating instrument.
Skill level: This class is for brand new beginner players.
2:20 PM - Playing By Ear - Linda
Learn to play a song without reading music. Skill level: It is
recommended that participants are familiar already with their instruments.
2:20 PM - Advanced Beg. Hammer Dulcimer - Gloria
Embellish tunes you already play using arpeggios & chords.
Skill level: Participants should be aware of where the notes are on their
instrument and how to use hammers.
3:45 PM - Embellishments from Chords - "Morning Has Broken" - Linda
Develop your song playing skills.
Skill level: Participants should be aware of where the notes are on their
instrument and how to use hammers.
FLATPICK GUITAR- Taught by Dan DeLancey
9:30 AM - Exploring the Fretboard Guitar Class
Skill level: Beginner players are welcome.
10:55 AM - Developing Good Rhythm Techniques
Skill level: Player should be familiar with playing the guitar.
3:45 PM - Lead Guitar in the Flat Picking Style
Skill level: Advanced player. Player is comfortable with the guitar and
knows how to play chords and notes.

AUTOHARP- Taught by Wanda Degen, 9:30 AM
9:30 AM - Meet the AUtoharp
The autoharp is a wonderful and easy instrument to use to accompany the
voice or another melody instrument. Starting with the basics- a brief
history and demonstration- students will learn some simple strumming
techniques. Building on that you'll discover what it takes to play lead-how
to pick out melodies- as well as some busier accompaniment. The repertoire
includes Appalachian, Celtic and Folk.
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate players are welcome.
KID'S CLASSES
11 AM - Have Fun with Folk Instruments (11 AM) - Gloria
From hammer dulcimer to bowed psaltery, try your hand at some unusual &
familiar instruments.
2:30 PM - Kids' Hands-on Music Project
Duluth Area Dulcimer Club will bring supplies to have kid's make a basic
percussion instrument and then participate in a small jam. Storyteller,
Elizabeth Nordell, will tell a tale and involve everyone and their
instruments.
KANTELE - Taught by Joyce Hakala
Kantele Basics (2:20 PM)
Learn the basics of playing this Finnish folk instrument. It is a relative
on the dulcimer.
Skill level: New players.
