MOUNTAIN DULCIMER CLASSES

Introduction to the Mountain Dulcimer

(Neil) 9-10 AM, Room D Topics covered will include: an overview of the modes and the corresponding modal tunings; use of the noter and fingers on the strings; rhythmic strums and plectrum (pick) techniques; the 6 1/2 fret; examples of traditional melodies and chord accompaniments in Celtic and American folk music. DAD tuning. For anyone, any age, no music experience necessary. Skill level: Beginner

Jigs & Reels

in DAD, Mt. Dulcimer (Shelley) 10:10-11:10 AM, Room D We'll Jigetty-Jig on the dulcimer. Tune DAD 6 1/2 fret needed - capo may be needed. Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Sea Songs on the Mt. Dulcimer

(Shelley) 11:20-12:20 PM, Room D Learn some songs of the sea on the mountain dulcimer in DAD. Skill level - Advanced Beginner (all levels welcome)

Scottish American Songs

(Neil Woodward) 2:30-3:30 PM, Room D DAD Tuning Traditional Scottish and Irish tunes abound in popular folk music all over the Great Lakes area. This workshop will feature songs from the old sod that were brought to the New World with refugees from hard times in Scotland and Ireland. Some of the old ballads have survived to this day largely intact. Many were adapted by working folks to tell the tale of their immigration and their struggle to make a new life. Still others traveled through generations of families in America, arriving in the Great Lakes industrial booms with immigrants from the southern United States. Skill level: Intermediate

O'Carolan Tunes on the Mt. Dulcimer

Tunes by Turlough O'Carolan

(Karen) 9 - 10 AM, Room B Tunes by the wonderful harp player will be taught in this class. Skill level: Intermediate

Introduction to the Hammered Dulcimer

(Wendy) 10:10-11:10 AM, Room B Learn how the notes are laid out and how to see patterns while playing this fascinating instrument. Skill level: This class is for brand new beginner players.

Easy Irish Tunes on the Hammered Dulcimer

(Karen) 11:20-12:20, Room B Learn a couple of good Irish tunes that are fun for jam sessions and are good ear and hand training too! Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Irish Jigs & Reel I & II

(Karen) 3 - 5:10 PM, Room B Learn lively dance tunes and ideas for variations and accompaniment. Skill level: Intermediate

Arranging Waltzes on the Hammered Dulcimer

(Karen) this class will be held Sunday May 8 from 11 to 1 pm. Location: TBA
Haunting Waltzes: Far Away
This is a beautiful waltz in B minor by Peter Jung that is widely played in contra dance and Irish circles. We'll cover several chord shapes, standard fillers for waltzes and also hemiolas (playing 6/8 against 3/4) for waltzes. A knowledge of D, G, A , B minor and F# sharp chords ahead of time will be helpful.
Skill level: Intermediate Class limited to 10 participants.

OTHER INSTRUMENTS

Mandolin Family

(Paul) 11:20-12:20, Room A Beginning mandolin workshop: If you have an instrument that can be tuned or capoed to gdae (mandolin, mandola, cittern, tenor banjo, mandolin banjo), you're in business in this class. You will learn some basic chords and scales and play the Irish polka, "Britches Full of Stitches." Skill level: Beginner to intermediate players are welcome.

Eurotunes By Ear for Assorted Instruments

(Paul) 10:10-11:10 AM, Room A Eurotunes by ear: Paul teaches some tunes from in and around Belgium in the traditional question and answer method (i.e. by ear; you get the printed music at the end as a reward). Open to all instruments that can comfortably play in the key of D and G. A good way to develop your ears if you don't have much experience in that department! Skill level: Able to play your instrument in D or G.

Open Tuning Guitar for Beginners

(Paul) 2:30 - 3:45 pm, Room A Dadgad for Beginners: guitarists who back up a lot of Celtic music often like to use this tuning because it is easy and sounds very appropriate. You will learn basic chords and rhythms to back up common session tunes. Skill level: All levels welcome.

Elementary Tin Whistle

(Ross) 11:30 - 12:15, Room C This workshop will be conducted for key of D whistle. Topics covered will include: an overview of the modes and keys used in traditional Celtic whistle tunes; introduction to chromatic possibilities on this diatonic instrument; examples of traditional dance tunes and their rhythmic characteristics. Kid's of All ages class. Skill level: Beginner

Bowed & Plucked Psaltry & Banjmo

(Wendy) 9:30-10, Room A Haunting sounds of the bowed psaltry and the fun banjo-like sound of the banjmo (cross between the mountain dulcimer and a banjo). Skill level: Beginner

Fiddle Irish Style

(Neil), 4 to 5:30 PM, Room A Participants should be able to make a pleasant sound, in tune, with basic scales in the first position. Topics covered include: overview of modes and keys used in traditional Irish music; bowing techniques, tempos and rhythmic characteristics of reels, hornpipes, and the various types of jigs; slow airs; O'Carolan tunes; accompanying singers. Skill level: Intermediate

FOR KIDS (OF ALL AGES)

Make a Limberjack

(Ross) 10 - 11 AM, Room C You'll be assembly a little wooden man that you can make dance by tapping a board. Works as a fun percussion instrument. *Note there will be a $5 material fee payable to Ross. Class is limited to 25 participants. Parents must be around to help younger kids. Additional kits may be available to purchase.

Tin Whistle for Beginners

(Ross) 11:30-12:15, Room C Learn the basics on a tin whistle. Key of D whistle will be used. Bring your own whistles or come early to purchase one from vendors. Skill level: Beginner

Singing with Ross

(Ross), 3-3:45 PM, Room C Bring your own instrument ;-). All welcome.

Beginner Bodhran

(Ross Sutter) 2:30 pm Learn the basics of the Irish drum. Some pizza boxes will be available if you don't have your own instrument. Skill level: Beginner

VIDEOS

There will be an assortment of videos that will be played during the day in the vendor area. Hummel players, hurdy gurdy, and making a cardboard instrument. Other videos may also be available to view.

INSTRUMENT VENDORS

Music Vendors will be around from 11 to 3 PM. You can try out instruments, look over music instruction books, and pick up music accessories.

DULCIMER DAY IN DULUTH BOOTH

Stop by the festival booth to purchase CDs by the performers. Dulcimer Day in Duluth t-shirts will also be for sale.
